I am curious as to why the decision to cancel the road race was based on a financial standpoint, considering the strong finances of the club (unless that situation has changed over the years).
48 riders with a week to go doesn't seem implausible to be filled on the day to get 60 (which was the limit for road races for many years).
I based my reason to start racing again this season to show up at the club road race, and attempt to be of use to fellow team mates. I'm feeling somewhat let down.
Subjectively, I've found that the races I've attended this year have had plenty of on the line entrants, harking back to the days of pre Olympic excitement over cycling, when you could enter on the line in many races.
Any further answers would be greatly appreciated, although I suspect they'll just sound like excuses rather than solid reasoning.
eleven entries from club members actually looks like a really solid showing, I’d guess that is about the same as previous years? I agree with a rich that the men’s race would likely have been at capacity with online entries. Harry
Hi Rich, it was disappointing, but we faced having more volunteers and officials at the event than participants. The event requires 3 commissaires, 5 NEG, 11 Accredited Marshals, 3 medics/static first aider, a broom wagon, 4 convoy drivers, 3 red flag marshals, refreshments/catering, signing, course set up, signon desk, etc etc. With circa 11 club member entrants, we had to decide whether it was in members interests - mainly in terms of volunteering resources. We decided that it wasn't.
Niel's hoping to organise a race at Moredon in August to satiate club members' appetite for racing.
Hope you get a race somewhere soon Rich, always good to see you racing.
