With all the press coverage over recent days and weeks, many of the public are incensed by what they see as “cyclists claiming the roads” at the expense of motorists. “They should be registered”, “They should be insured”, “They should have numberplates”…
At the same time, as a club we rely on broad public support to keep us safe, to feed us new members, and to win us access for things like races/cafes/events etc.
When you participate in a club ride, whether wearing a jersey or not, you are an advert for the club. Most members show us in a good light, and if that includes you then keep up the good work.
If a member of the public shouts abuse or trots out an expression like “you should pay road tax”, don’t react negatively to it or we ourselves might appear in the next headline. For the good of your club, rise above it and remain polite. “When we wear the jersey, we are the club”
